‘Wicked’ entertains with flourish and heart in Oklahoma City<\/a> stop \u2013 Reviewed BY JOHN BRANDENBURG For The Oklahoman<\/p>\n

It was a little hard to tell what a wild and delightfully twisted tale \u2014 loosely based on \u201cThe Wizard of Oz\u201d \u2014 signified, in a staging of the musical \u201cWicked\u201d at Civic Center Music Hall<\/a>, 201 N Walker.<\/p>\n

But for most audience members, it was enough to be along for the razzle-dazzle, special effects-enhanced ride, even on a broomstick, during Thursday’s Celebrity Attractions version of the hit Broadway show.<\/p>\n

Telling the story in flashback was the \u201cgood\u201d witch Glinda, shortened from Galinda, played with the right \u201ctrying too hard to be liked\u201d qualities by Hayley Podschun, although her high-pitched voice at times made her hard to hear.<\/p>\n

Held aloft on a glitzy prop, Podschun as Glinda, got the ball rolling, joined by lavishly costumed citizens of Oz in a rousing version of \u201cNo One Mourns the Wicked,\u201d at the beginning of Acts 1 and 2.<\/p>\n

But it was her friendship of opposites with the green-skinned \u201cbad\u201d witch Elphaba, portrayed with at first low-key but steadily gathering power and panache, by Jennifer DiNoia, which fueled the high octane production.<\/p>\n

Humorously disarming were Galinda’s attempts to teach Elphaba how to be \u201cPopular\u201d in act one, while a late number in which they realize they have changed each others lives \u201cFor Good\u201d was memorable and moving.<\/p>\n

The same might be said of DiNoia’s touching \u201cI’m Not That Girl,\u201d a song directed at Fiyero, the man they both love, which turns into her deeply felt love duet with him, \u201cAs Long As You’re Mine,\u201d in act two.<\/p>\n

DiNoia reached her greatest literal and figurative heights, however, while she was \u201cDefying Gravity,\u201d brandishing her broom, in the nearly showstopping ode to personal empowerment which closed Act 1.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
