Wicked soars again in its fourth visit to Houston – reviewed by Everett Evans.

The alchemy that makes a hit musical is as weird and inexplicable as a witch’s spell – as the touring “Wicked” demonstrates yet again in the Broadway blockbuster’s fourth visit to Houston.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel telling the back story of the good and bad witches of Oz, “Wicked” soars despite unevenness in Winnie Holzman’s book and Stephen Schwartz’s score – both with fine moments, yet overall, more serviceable than inspired. “Wicked” lands a phenomenal punch anyway, because the premise is so irresistible and every other key element of the show, from direction to design to performance, is just about ideal.

As always, the first thing you notice is Eugene Lee’s elaborate scenic design: a proscenium of gadgets and gizmos, framing the show curtain depicting the map of Oz, topped by the Time Dragon, a huge puppet whose eyes glow red as it breathes fire and flaps its enormous wings. That’s the tip-off that “Wicked” is the real deal, a grand-scale, fully appointed Broadway musical – a rare breed these days, whether in New York or on the road.

Once the curtain rises, the rest of Lee’s settings, Susan Hilferty’s wildly imaginative costumes and Kenneth Posner’s magical lighting combine to conjure an extravagant vision, fantasyland with quirky twists – after all, Oz always had a freakish streak. Joe Mantello’s fluid and inventive direction melds all the design elements and the company into vivid stage pictures. With eclectic choreographic embellishment by Wayne Cilento, Mantello generates narrative momentum, with increasing attention to the more dramatic aspects as it advances.

David Nathan Perlow plays callow Fiyero with charm and sings agreeably. Kathy Fitzgerald makes a properly imperious, then sinister Madame Morrible. Walker Jones’ Wizard is a genial albeit low-key charlatan. Jenny Fellner and Alex Wyse do nicely with the subplot of lovelorn Nessarose and Boq, her ill-fated swain.

Perhaps inevitably, “Wicked” impresses much as before. You can’t keep a good, or wicked, witch down.

The Broadway production of hit musical Wicked will welcome Emmy Award winner Carol Kane and Michael Wartella to its cast at the Gershwin Theatre.

Carol Kane will return to the Broadway production as Madame Morrible beginning July 1, 2013. Kane previously performed the role on Broadway, in Los Angeles and on tour. Randy Danson, who is currently playing the role of Madame Morrible, will play her final performance June 30.

Michael Wartella

Michael Wartella will assume the role of Boq starting June 25. F. Michael Haynie, who is currently playing the role, will give his final performance June 23.

Every aspect of the performance is what you would expect from a professional touring company. The lighting is amazing, the voices are pure and on-key, the costumes are gorgeous, the dancing is flawless, the casting is perfect. But that’s not too surprising for any show that has this kind of money invested in it and this kind of fan base and pedigree. In fact, it’s kind of a given.

The leading ladies Jennifer DiNoia and Hayley Podschun are beautiful and have angelic voices. You won’t remember that as much. What you’ll remember from their performances are their faces – the power in their emotions, whether Podschun is nailing the punchline of a joke or DiNoia is passionately defending Elphaba’s right to be her own green-skinned self. You’ll remember the wild, despairing look DiNoia’s eyes as she sings “No Good Deed” and the irrepressible and infectious charisma of Podschun as she explains how essential it is to be loved in the performance of “Popular.”

DiNoia is on her fifth company of “Wicked,” and her mastery of her character is truly something to see. She conveys Elphaba’s caustic defensiveness in a way that makes the character’s passionate activism neither irritating nor admirable. It is simply decent – and that’s what this story is about. Being decent, being the best and most honest version of yourself that there is. Elphaba, with her black costumes, rolling eyes and constant one-liners, runs the risk of being the annoying goth kid; in DiNoia’s capable hands, she is simply a flawed, beautiful character who is marvelously, impeccably acted.

Both actresses were able to harness the emotions and sympathies of the audience and hold it in their hands for two and a half hours. The cast was nicely rounded out by Walker Jones as the Wizard and David Nathan Perlow as Fiyero.
