If you’re a fan of The Wizard of Oz, then Wicked is the must see equivalent in musical form. Though the story is different, many of the same characters are dealt with, and this musical is fun, romantic, and creative.

While The Wizard of Oz focuses on Dorothy Gale and her trip to the magical land of Oz, Wicked is a bit different. This musical focuses on Elphaba (known in The Wizard of Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda, later known as Glinda (the Good Witch). The musical explores Elphaba and Glinda in their younger days when they attended school together, and the way that it progresses helps to demonstrate how Elphaba became perceived as evil and how this is an entirely incorrect interpretation.

Broadway box offices were busy places last week – 11 musicals made more than $1 million of which Wicked was Big seller again.

The Broadway League said Monday that total grosses for the week ending Sunday soared to $28.9 million, up from $23.8 million the week before.

The numbers, boosted by vacationers, did not even need “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which was on hiatus.

Making the millionaire’s club were perennial big sellers “Wicked,” “Mary Poppins,” “Jersey Boys,” “The Addams Family,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Billy Elliot,” “Mamma Mia!” and “The Lion King.” Two new hot tickets were “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “The Book of Mormon” and the outgoing “American Idiot.”

Wicked coming to Peoria, Illinois to perform at Peoria Civic Center Theater as it’s first downstate run, from October 13 through October 30.

The Peoria Civic Center is thrilled to host the premiere engagement of ‘Wicked’ in downstate Illinois,” states Debbie Ritschel, the Civic Center’s general manager. “The show itself is the biggest blockbuster to play on our stage in years. Wicked Musical visiting next week at the Hult Center, when the touring production of “Wicked” flies into the Hult Center’s Silva Concert Hall for a whopping 16 performances. The show opens Wednesday and runs through May 1, 2011 in Eugene, Oregon.

The show opened on Broadway in 2003. It immediately drew a lukewarm review from The New York Time’s Bill Brantley, who said

it was saved from total mediocrity only by the casting of Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda the Good Witch.

“She provides the essential helium in a bloated production that might otherwise spend close to three hours flapping its

oversized wings without taking off,” the critic wrote. But audiences saw things quite differently, and “Wicked” is still going strong on Broadway and around the world.
