Broadway box offices were busy places last week – 11 musicals made more than $1 million of which Wicked was Big seller again.

The Broadway League said Monday that total grosses for the week ending Sunday soared to $28.9 million, up from $23.8 million the week before.

The numbers, boosted by vacationers, did not even need “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” which was on hiatus.

Making the millionaire’s club were perennial big sellers “Wicked,” “Mary Poppins,” “Jersey Boys,” “The Addams Family,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Billy Elliot,” “Mamma Mia!” and “The Lion King.” Two new hot tickets were “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “The Book of Mormon” and the outgoing “American Idiot.”

The touring musical previously stopped in Buffalo NY in 2008, where it set box office records and claimed many sellouts.

Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One – born with emerald-green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. “Wicked” — the 1995 novel by Maguire — tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.
