The show, set to music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is a frequently tongue-in-cheek look into the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba, two young witches with strikingly different personalities and skin tones who later grow into the personifications of good and evil we know from “The Wizard of Oz.”

The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. “Wicked” — the 1995 novel by Maguire — tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.
