Wicked musical returns to Boston for it’s 5th visit and will play at the Boston Opera House through July 23, 2017.
The musical’s story is based on Concord author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 imaginative revisionist novel that takes a different look at the characters and land in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” and Frank L. Baum’s 1900 children’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and its sequels. The musical has been seen by more than 50 million worldwide since it first burst onto stage. The show recently celebrated its 13th anniversary on Broadway where it continues to run at the Gershwin Theatre.

Wednesdays – 7:30 PM
Thursdays – 7:30 PM
Fridays – 8:00 PM
Saturdays – 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM
Sundays – 1:00 PM and 6:30 PM
The Boston Opera House was packed at Wednesday night’s press opening of the current Boston engagement. Faithful theatergoers whooped with glee at the familiar songs and marveled at the elements of spectacle that enhance the compelling story. It’s the tale of the unlikely bond between Elphaba, aka “the Wicked Witch of the West,” and Glinda The Good, their sisterhood, as well as social justice, good and evil, and the rewards of following one’s heart and best instincts.
Elphaba has a mysterious power that she doesn’t understand until she is given a book of spells only she can read. The best friends go off to meet the Wizard, but Elphaba discovers he is a charlatan who deludes his people by blaming their problems on the animals.
When Elphaba realizes that she must oppose the Wizard, he gives out the fake news that she is “Wicked.” Elphaba and Glinda battle over their classmate, the sexy Prince Fiyero — who none-the-less has a brain and moral backbone. When Glinda loses him, she decides to stay on the Wizard’s team. Their adventures include several references to Dorothy, who never appears on stage but fits obliquely into the theatrical version.

‘Wicked’ is wonderful trip back to Land of Oz – Reviewed By TONY FARRELL, at TimesDispatch.com.
Lucky for us, here comes Broadway in Richmond’s “Wicked,” the ebullient, spectacular, Tony Award-winning musical reimagining of Baum’s original vision currently playing at the Altria Theater.
As crafted through Stephen Schwartz’s bold music and lyrics and story by Winnie Holzman, “Wicked” sets out to explain the story behind the story of Elphaba, the “Wicked Witch of the West,” and her connection to Glinda, the “Good Witch of the North.”
Charging relentlessly forward through more than 20 musical numbers under vast sets evoking the inner workings of a timepiece, “Wicked” brings every ounce of theatrical grandeur to bear on themes of good and evil, solitude and alienation, and even “tiktokism,” a Baum construct that imagined time as a sleeping dragon and clocks as portals to the past, present and future.
“Wicked” is a treatise on friendship, loyalty, and how all who come into our lives help to make us who we are, even as we go our own way. It’s a lesson we spend our entire lives learning, and whether we journey by bubble, broomstick or road of yellow brick, “Wicked” makes it one magical, magnificent trip.

The musical, set in the Land of Oz, tells the story of two very different witches, Elphaba and Glinda. The girls struggle with life, a blossoming friendship and deep differences that transform one into the Wicked Witch of the West and the other into Glinda the Good. Fan favorite songs like “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “No One Mourns the Wicked” will be featured.

Wicked is most certainly a theatrical experience – Reviewed By Cara Richardson, at BroadWayWorld.com.
Everyone knows the story of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy arrives in Oz and must find the Wizard and defeat an evil witch to make it back home to her beloved Kansas. Wicked is an entirely different spin on the story. Wicked takes you back, to before Dorothy got to Oz. How did the wicked witches become wicked? How did Glinda the Good Witch become good? This is where Wicked steps in and fills in all those blanks. It truly is the “untold stories of the witches of Oz.”
While some may think this could be a boring musical for children, trust me when I say that it is far from that. While this is a show that children will enjoy, Wicked delves much deeper into human nature than most “children’s” shows. Wicked gives a hard look at how the choices we make define our lives, and how difficult it can be to be different and to stand for what you believe in.
Alison Luff plays the role of Elphaba, a young and different girl. Her green skin makes her an outcast at the school she’s attending. Glinda, played by Gina Beck, is the belle of the ball. The quintessential “golden child,” Glinda has no problems getting her way until she meets her new school roommate. Enemies from the start, Glinda and Elphaba learn much about themselves and each other throughout their stories.
The set, by Eugene Lee, is a character of the show all on its own. There are times the set is so fluid and the actors so intense, that you can be concentrating on the actors and look up and then entire set has changed. It really is a sight to behold. The lighting, by Kenneth Posner, is much the same. The most notable, and obvious moment of lighting is during “Defying Gravity” in which Elphaba is lit so beautifully, that it gives even more power and emphasis to the already powerful number.

After more than a decade, “Wicked” has proven its extraordinary staying power – Reviewed By Amy Stumpfl, at The Tennessean.
When “Wicked” first premiered on Broadway in 2003, the reviews were unmistakably mixed. But as they often do, audiences had the final word, and 10 years later, “Wicked” has been declared “a cultural phenomenon,” smashing box office records around the world.
This week, the award-winning musical landed in Nashville once again, for a four-week engagement in TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall. And after selling out in record time in both 2009 and 2011, it’s safe to say that “Wicked’s” allure is “evergreen.”
The touring production certainly has lost none of its luster, thanks in part to exceptional casting. Alison Luff is excellent as Elphaba — her witchy cackle alone garnered enthusiastic cheers from the audience at Thursday evening’s performance. She glosses over the character’s awkward misfit persona just a bit, but her explosive vocals are amazing, particularly in big numbers such as “Defying Gravity.”
Gina Beck makes a dazzling U.S. debut, joining the tour directly from the West End production of “Wicked,” where she also played Glinda. Beck’s crystalline voice is stunning, but she also has the comedic chops to work the crowd for maximum laughs in “Popular.” She and Luff are delightful together, clearly having fun with “What Is This Feeling?” and delivering a stirring rendition of “For Good.”
Two-time Tony Award nominee Alison Fraser provides great support as schoolmistress Madame Morrible. Jenny Florkowski is lovely as Nessarose, and Nick Adams plays the carefree Fiyero with confidence (“Dancing Through Life”). Meanwhile, television/film veteran Tim Kazurinsky brings his own brand of corn-fed charm to the so-called “Wonderful” Wizard of Oz.
I’m still in awe of Eugene Lee’s richly layered set — from the intricate clock gears to Glinda’s magical floating bubble. Susan Hilferty’s exquisitely detailed costumes are enchanting, as are Tom Watson’s funky wigs and hair design. And Kenneth Posner’s lighting adds another dimension to the already impressive display of stagecraft.

Wicked is Back Again at State Theatre – Cleveland, to Dazzle You with Big Tunes, Witchy Spells and Major Glitz – Reviewed By Christine Howey, CleveScene.com.
Wicked is about the original Wicked Witch and her counterpart Glinda the Good Witch, not the versions Hamilton and Billie Burke created in the iconic flick. But their indelible performances always seem to hover around and about this show, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman.
This show has been performed so many times in so many places, it’s as seamless and smooth as a billiard ball. But that’s how the devotees of the play, many of whom tend to be teen and pre-teen girls, want it to be.
This production doesn’t disappoint from that perspective. Indeed, it may even exceed previous touring companies in some respects.
Featuring a story with some fairly complex plot turns that chronologically straddles the arrival of Dorothy in Oz, Wicked is a polished and stunningly designed production that never fails to amaze. Even when some of the set pieces and effects are clearly extraneous, they still have to power to fascinate.
If a house landed on you when you were young and you don’t know the story, suffice to say that the mean green witch (actual name Elphaba) and Glinda (actual name Galinda) met when students at Shiz University. Pursuing their studies in sorcery, they eventually bond, but are clearly flying their brooms in different directions, career-wise.
Glinda is a ditzy Legally Blonde-ish kind of witch, a fave of everyone who meets her. But she has a good heart and shares her crowd-pleasing knowledge with the sharp-edged Elphaba in the catchy song “Popular.”
In that role, Hayley Podschun dutifully mimics the performance markers set down by the original stage Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth. (Hey, this show is a valuable corporate product and like any good corporation, they’re looking for consistency.) But Podschun nails her songs with verve and high spirits, and what more can you ask?
Of course, Elphaba is an entirely different sort of enchantress. This is cemented in the show’s sterling song, the Act 1 closer “Defying Gravity,” in which Elphaba declares her independence in a rush of beautifully scored self-help aphorisms: “Too late for second guessing/Too late to go back to sleep/It’s time to trust my instincts/Close my eyes and leap!”
