Wicked is most certainly a theatrical experience – Reviewed By Cara Richardson, at BroadWayWorld.com.

Everyone knows the story of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy arrives in Oz and must find the Wizard and defeat an evil witch to make it back home to her beloved Kansas. Wicked is an entirely different spin on the story. Wicked takes you back, to before Dorothy got to Oz. How did the wicked witches become wicked? How did Glinda the Good Witch become good? This is where Wicked steps in and fills in all those blanks. It truly is the “untold stories of the witches of Oz.”

While some may think this could be a boring musical for children, trust me when I say that it is far from that. While this is a show that children will enjoy, Wicked delves much deeper into human nature than most “children’s” shows. Wicked gives a hard look at how the choices we make define our lives, and how difficult it can be to be different and to stand for what you believe in.

Alison Luff plays the role of Elphaba, a young and different girl. Her green skin makes her an outcast at the school she’s attending. Glinda, played by Gina Beck, is the belle of the ball. The quintessential “golden child,” Glinda has no problems getting her way until she meets her new school roommate. Enemies from the start, Glinda and Elphaba learn much about themselves and each other throughout their stories.

The set, by Eugene Lee, is a character of the show all on its own. There are times the set is so fluid and the actors so intense, that you can be concentrating on the actors and look up and then entire set has changed. It really is a sight to behold. The lighting, by Kenneth Posner, is much the same. The most notable, and obvious moment of lighting is during “Defying Gravity” in which Elphaba is lit so beautifully, that it gives even more power and emphasis to the already powerful number.

After more than a decade, “Wicked” has proven its extraordinary staying power – Reviewed By Amy Stumpfl, at The Tennessean.

When “Wicked” first premiered on Broadway in 2003, the reviews were unmistakably mixed. But as they often do, audiences had the final word, and 10 years later, “Wicked” has been declared “a cultural phenomenon,” smashing box office records around the world.

This week, the award-winning musical landed in Nashville once again, for a four-week engagement in TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall. And after selling out in record time in both 2009 and 2011, it’s safe to say that “Wicked’s” allure is “evergreen.”

The touring production certainly has lost none of its luster, thanks in part to exceptional casting. Alison Luff is excellent as Elphaba — her witchy cackle alone garnered enthusiastic cheers from the audience at Thursday evening’s performance. She glosses over the character’s awkward misfit persona just a bit, but her explosive vocals are amazing, particularly in big numbers such as “Defying Gravity.”

Gina Beck makes a dazzling U.S. debut, joining the tour directly from the West End production of “Wicked,” where she also played Glinda. Beck’s crystalline voice is stunning, but she also has the comedic chops to work the crowd for maximum laughs in “Popular.” She and Luff are delightful together, clearly having fun with “What Is This Feeling?” and delivering a stirring rendition of “For Good.”

Two-time Tony Award nominee Alison Fraser provides great support as schoolmistress Madame Morrible. Jenny Florkowski is lovely as Nessarose, and Nick Adams plays the carefree Fiyero with confidence (“Dancing Through Life”). Meanwhile, television/film veteran Tim Kazurinsky brings his own brand of corn-fed charm to the so-called “Wonderful” Wizard of Oz.

I’m still in awe of Eugene Lee’s richly layered set — from the intricate clock gears to Glinda’s magical floating bubble. Susan Hilferty’s exquisitely detailed costumes are enchanting, as are Tom Watson’s funky wigs and hair design. And Kenneth Posner’s lighting adds another dimension to the already impressive display of stagecraft.

The musical is based on the novel of the same name, in which author Gregory Maguire cooked up a rich backstory (including a first name) for the Wicked Witch of the West. When Wicked first landed in Nashville in 2009, it played to sold-out crowds and broke box-office records. Now, the award-winning blockbuster is back and once again ready to cast its spell on local audiences at Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, Wicked opened on Broadway in 2003 and quickly became something of a cultural phenomenon. Loosely based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical explores the untold story (and unlikely friendship) of green-skinned Elphaba and Glinda the Good — and just how they became the witches of Oz.

Wicked cast - Tiffany Haas as Glinda and Anne Brummel as Elphaba

Wicked cast - Tiffany Haas as Glinda and Anne Brummel as Elphaba

Anne Brummel brings great strength and sensitivity to the role of Elphaba, wowing the crowd in the show’s defining musical number, “Defying Gravity.” Meanwhile, Tiffany Haas shines as the perky and popular Glinda. Far less chirpy than other Glindas I’ve seen, Haas makes the most of the role’s comic elements, while capitalizing on its more bittersweet moments.

And while the two seemed a bit tentative in their opening numbers, both settle into their roles nicely, sharing a joyful chemistry. “What Is This Feeling?” and “Popular” are especially fun.

Brummel and Haas receive fine support from Jody Gelb (as schoolmistress Madame Morrible), Emily Ferranti (Nessarose) and Dan Pacheco (Boq). David Nathan Perlow is charming as love-interest Fiyero, and film/stage veteran Don Amendolia is … well, wonderful as the Wizard.

Eugene Lee’s elaborate set continues to amaze, and the production’s technical wizardry is dazzling — from the Time Dragon Clock and flying monkeys to Glinda’s gracefully floating bubble. Susan Hilferty’s intricate and colorful costumes and Kenneth Posner’s dramatic lighting add to the spectacle.

The successful Broadway musical, Wicked returns to Tennessee Performing Arts Center – Andrew Jackson Hall on October 19, 2011. Wicked musical shows at Nashville, TN Continues Mondays-Sundays through November 06, 2011.

Wicked Musical broke box office records and sold out in record time when it first played Nashville in 2009. The 2009 touring production was technically fantastic, with wonderful performers throughout the cast — especially Marcie Dodd, whose Elphaba soared (“Defying Gravity”), and Helene Yorke, whose Glinda was equally good (“Popular”). Dodd has continued to tour with the show, but Music City gets new principals this time around — Anne Brummel and Tiffany Haas. But with such a strong book by Winnie Holzman, and with Stephen Schwartz’s exciting score, there’s little chance local audiences would ever be disappointed. For the uninitiated, you’ll be getting cued in to what happened in Oz long before Dorothy rode in on the twister from Kansas.

The Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical Wicked will hit Tennessee Performing Arts Center October 19 to November 06.

Entertainment Weekly calls Wicked “the best musical of the decade,” and when it first played Nashville in 2009, it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards, Wicked is Broadway’s biggest blockbuster, a cultural phenomenon and was just named “the defining musical of the decade” by The New York Times.

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for “the most complete and completely satisfying new musical in a long time” (USA Today).
