‘Wicked’ is wonderful trip back to Land of Oz – Reviewed By TONY FARRELL, at TimesDispatch.com.

Lucky for us, here comes Broadway in Richmond’s “Wicked,” the ebullient, spectacular, Tony Award-winning musical reimagining of Baum’s original vision currently playing at the Altria Theater.

As crafted through Stephen Schwartz’s bold music and lyrics and story by Winnie Holzman, “Wicked” sets out to explain the story behind the story of Elphaba, the “Wicked Witch of the West,” and her connection to Glinda, the “Good Witch of the North.”

Charging relentlessly forward through more than 20 musical numbers under vast sets evoking the inner workings of a timepiece, “Wicked” brings every ounce of theatrical grandeur to bear on themes of good and evil, solitude and alienation, and even “tiktokism,” a Baum construct that imagined time as a sleeping dragon and clocks as portals to the past, present and future.

“Wicked” is a treatise on friendship, loyalty, and how all who come into our lives help to make us who we are, even as we go our own way. It’s a lesson we spend our entire lives learning, and whether we journey by bubble, broomstick or road of yellow brick, “Wicked” makes it one magical, magnificent trip.

Wicked is most certainly a theatrical experience – Reviewed By Cara Richardson, at BroadWayWorld.com.

Everyone knows the story of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy arrives in Oz and must find the Wizard and defeat an evil witch to make it back home to her beloved Kansas. Wicked is an entirely different spin on the story. Wicked takes you back, to before Dorothy got to Oz. How did the wicked witches become wicked? How did Glinda the Good Witch become good? This is where Wicked steps in and fills in all those blanks. It truly is the “untold stories of the witches of Oz.”

While some may think this could be a boring musical for children, trust me when I say that it is far from that. While this is a show that children will enjoy, Wicked delves much deeper into human nature than most “children’s” shows. Wicked gives a hard look at how the choices we make define our lives, and how difficult it can be to be different and to stand for what you believe in.

Alison Luff plays the role of Elphaba, a young and different girl. Her green skin makes her an outcast at the school she’s attending. Glinda, played by Gina Beck, is the belle of the ball. The quintessential “golden child,” Glinda has no problems getting her way until she meets her new school roommate. Enemies from the start, Glinda and Elphaba learn much about themselves and each other throughout their stories.

The set, by Eugene Lee, is a character of the show all on its own. There are times the set is so fluid and the actors so intense, that you can be concentrating on the actors and look up and then entire set has changed. It really is a sight to behold. The lighting, by Kenneth Posner, is much the same. The most notable, and obvious moment of lighting is during “Defying Gravity” in which Elphaba is lit so beautifully, that it gives even more power and emphasis to the already powerful number.

After more than a decade, “Wicked” has proven its extraordinary staying power – Reviewed By Amy Stumpfl, at The Tennessean.

When “Wicked” first premiered on Broadway in 2003, the reviews were unmistakably mixed. But as they often do, audiences had the final word, and 10 years later, “Wicked” has been declared “a cultural phenomenon,” smashing box office records around the world.

This week, the award-winning musical landed in Nashville once again, for a four-week engagement in TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall. And after selling out in record time in both 2009 and 2011, it’s safe to say that “Wicked’s” allure is “evergreen.”

The touring production certainly has lost none of its luster, thanks in part to exceptional casting. Alison Luff is excellent as Elphaba — her witchy cackle alone garnered enthusiastic cheers from the audience at Thursday evening’s performance. She glosses over the character’s awkward misfit persona just a bit, but her explosive vocals are amazing, particularly in big numbers such as “Defying Gravity.”

Gina Beck makes a dazzling U.S. debut, joining the tour directly from the West End production of “Wicked,” where she also played Glinda. Beck’s crystalline voice is stunning, but she also has the comedic chops to work the crowd for maximum laughs in “Popular.” She and Luff are delightful together, clearly having fun with “What Is This Feeling?” and delivering a stirring rendition of “For Good.”

Two-time Tony Award nominee Alison Fraser provides great support as schoolmistress Madame Morrible. Jenny Florkowski is lovely as Nessarose, and Nick Adams plays the carefree Fiyero with confidence (“Dancing Through Life”). Meanwhile, television/film veteran Tim Kazurinsky brings his own brand of corn-fed charm to the so-called “Wonderful” Wizard of Oz.

I’m still in awe of Eugene Lee’s richly layered set — from the intricate clock gears to Glinda’s magical floating bubble. Susan Hilferty’s exquisitely detailed costumes are enchanting, as are Tom Watson’s funky wigs and hair design. And Kenneth Posner’s lighting adds another dimension to the already impressive display of stagecraft.

It’s not easy being green, but it’s no walk in the park being mean either. Those are the lessons of the wildly popular musical Wicked, on tour at the Providence Performing Arts Center in an extended run through January 12. Subtitled “The Untold Story of The Witches of Oz,” the tale has been seen by more than 13 million theatergoers from New York to Japan. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the book is by Winnie Holzman, and it was directed by Joe Mantello.

No Judy Garland look-alike appears, but occasional details from the movie emerge in the background, such as a glimpse of a yellow brick road and, in silhouette toward the end, a bucket of water melting the wicked witch, Elphaba (Alison Luff). (Don’t worry, in this telling that was faked, so she’s fine.)

This backstory to The Wizard of Oz takes place in a land of wand-waving and spell-casting that Harry Potter would enjoy. Children can be cruel, so we’d expect them to give Elphaba a hard time when she arrives at Shiz University, but her father has apparently been crueler, making clear that her only purpose in life is to take care of her wheelchair-bound sister Nessarose (Jaime Rosenstein).

The witches of Oz still cast their spell.

The musical has a lot going for it, from the catchy tunes to Eugene Lee’s brilliant clockwork sets. But the key is the relationship between Elphaba, the wicked (and very green) witch, and her enemy-turned-friend Glinda.

Elphaba is the lead part (after all, the show is called “Wicked” ) and Alison Luff gave a strong performance as both actor and singer, belting out signature songs such as “Defying Gravity” while portraying her character’s progression from naivete to ambition, outrage and finally rebellion.

But Glinda, played by Gina Beck, had to carry much of the comedic load. Beck has a lovely voice, although not quite as strong as Luff’s, and she is a gifted comic actress.

Glinda is an insufferably shallow, perky blonde who dresses like Barbie, and is apparently beloved by all. The outcast Elphaba immediately despises her, as the two sing “What is This Feeling?” (It’s loathing, that’s what.).

But the two go on to develop a friendship — there is a very funny scene in which Glinda tries to teach Elphaba the proper way to toss her hair — before they are temporarily torn apart by both love and politics.

“Wicked!” and “Awesome!” – Reviewed by Chris Harding via Boston Neighborhood News.

The musical , which depicts an alternate history of the witches of Oz, has repeatedly broken box office records in Boston and around the world, having been seen by 37 million people (largely those of the female persuasion). You don’t need green spectacles to perceive that the young leads have greater vocal power and stage presence than many a better-known performer could muster.

At the heart of this prequel is the ever-changing friendship and rivalry between two women who meet at the Hogwartian Shiz University. Alison Luff plays the green-skinned, thin-skinned Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West while Jenn Gambatese portrays her blonde-headed, air-headed roomie, who becomes Glinda the Good.

The show was adapted from a best-seller of the same title written by part-time Concord, MA, resident Gregory Maguire. Librettist Winnie Holzman’s stage version is more light-hearted and conventionally romantic than Maguire’s somewhat grim and definitely adult take on the Frank L. Baum classic series. Creator of the lauded TV series “My So-Called Life,” she highlights “Seventeen”-ish issues like body images, dangerous boyfriends, school rivalries, self-esteem, and animal rights. However, Holzman doesn’t shy from the book’s existential reflections on how well-intentioned deeds can turn out to have evil effects.

So “Wicked” fronts up with more than enough spectacle and laughs to enchant the first-time viewer, but its haunting, tangled plot and intelligent lyrics just seem to grow richer and more intricate with each subsequent visit. So slip on your ruby red party shoes and head over to the Boston Opera House.
