Lucky for us, here comes Broadway in Richmond’s “Wicked,” the ebullient, spectacular, Tony Award-winning musical reimagining of Baum’s original vision currently playing at the Altria Theater.

As crafted through Stephen Schwartz’s bold music and lyrics and story by Winnie Holzman, “Wicked” sets out to explain the story behind the story of Elphaba, the “Wicked Witch of the West,” and her connection to Glinda, the “Good Witch of the North.”

Charging relentlessly forward through more than 20 musical numbers under vast sets evoking the inner workings of a timepiece, “Wicked” brings every ounce of theatrical grandeur to bear on themes of good and evil, solitude and alienation, and even “tiktokism,” a Baum construct that imagined time as a sleeping dragon and clocks as portals to the past, present and future.

“Wicked” is a treatise on friendship, loyalty, and how all who come into our lives help to make us who we are, even as we go our own way. It’s a lesson we spend our entire lives learning, and whether we journey by bubble, broomstick or road of yellow brick, “Wicked” makes it one magical, magnificent trip.

The first North American touring company of Wicked welcomes Emma Hunton as Elphaba on April 23 in Richmond, VA at Altria Theater – Richmond (Formerly Landmark Theater).

Hunton joins the cast that includes Gina Beck as Glinda, Alison Fraser as Madame Morrible and Tim Kazurinsky as The Wizard.

Hunton’s credits include the Broadway company of Spring Awakening (Ilse) as well as the Off-Broadway company of RENT (Maureen). She was last on tour with the 1st National Tour of Next to Normal (Natalie) and most recently played Ryan in the world premiere of Witness Uganda at the American Repertory Theater.

“Wicked” takes the audience in reverse, back to the school days of Glinda and the Wicked Witch, or Elphaba as she was known then. The popular, blonde Glindaand outcast, green Elphaba meet, compete for the chance to meet the all-powerful and wonderful wizard, and most surprisingly of all, become friends. The backdrop to all of this is an Oz in danger of losing all of the color and diversity (and talking animals) that make it magical in the first place.

A lot of Broadway musicals have the lights, the sparkle, and the show-stopping numbers, but very little underneath. It’s easy to create the big, loud experience of a musical, but it’s a lot harder to create the heartbeat underneath it. “Wicked” will blow you away technically and that might be what you talk about when you leave the Landmark Theater VA.

Natalie Daradich, Chris Peluso to Join Second North American Tour of Wicked

Natalie Daradich will play Glinda and Chris Peluso will play Fiyero in the second North American tour of Wicked on March 10 when the production begins its engagement at the Landmark Theater in Richmond Virginia.

The company also features Marcie Dodd (Elphaba), Marilyn Caskey (Madame Morrible), Don Amendolia (The Wizard), David de Vries (Dr. Dillamond), Zach Hanna (Boq), Kristine Reese (Nessarose), and Anne Brummel (Standby for Elphaba), as well as Meredith Akins, Alicia L. Albright, Kerry Blanchard, Michael Drolet, Jeremy Duvall, Christine Dwyer, Peter C.
