Wicked musical Houston tour concluded with huge applause where they toured with new Elphaba and Glinda taking the leads. The current tour features Olivia Valli as Elphaba and Celia Hottenstein as Glinda in the National Tour of Wicked.

Olivia Valli, who plays Elphaba in the national tour of “Wicked,” first saw the musical in 2015 on Broadway. She was fascinated by the story, a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” that focuses on the relationship between a young Glinda, the good witch, and Elphaba, the misunderstood green witch. Valli first auditioned for the role after college, then worked for several months as a wedding singer. But she kept coming back to Oz. She eventually landed the part of Elphaba’s understudy on the tour, where she sharpened her skills from 2016-2019. Houston, in fact, was the first place she stepped into the role.

Celia Hottenstein, the current tour’s Glinda, followed a similar path (or yellow brick road, if you will). She grew up a theater kid and first saw “Wicked” in 2005, a year-and-a-half after it opened on Broadway. From that moment, Glinda was her “dream” role. Hottenstein auditioned five times for the show across six years, eventually securing the role of Glinda’s understudy. She went on as Glinda 10 times on Broadway.

The handsome Fiyero develops a relationship with Elphaba, who later becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West.

“I’m so excited,” Adams said, by phone. “It’s been running for like 10 years, so to be part of something so hugely successful and long-running is great.”

Adams, who play Fiyero, is one of three new cast members. Film star and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Tim Kazurinsky replaced John Davidson as the Wizard; Jenny Florkowski took the role of Nessarose.

“Wicked” is subtitled “The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz.” Call it a prequel, call it an origin story or both. The musical, according to the show’s website, explains how Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) came to be:

“Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. ‘Wicked’ tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.”

Fiyero plays a key role in “Wicked.”

“He’s actually the love interest of both Glinda and Elphaba,” Adams said. “He’s the prince of the Winkies, and this new kid who comes to town … He’s sort of the bad boy, and has this carefree attitude about life. Eventually, Elphaba is the one who makes him change his idea about how he wants to live his life and he becomes a man of responsibility and the captain of the guard.”

Jaime Rosenstein to Play Nessarose at PPAC

Jaime Rosenstein to Play Nessarose at PPAC

Jaime Rosenstein is a Brown University graduate and a veteran of the joint Brown-Trinity Rep program. Actress Jaime Rosenstein auditioned for “Wicked” on a Monday, was told she got the job on Tuesday, and was flying off to Dallas two days later to join the national tour of the popular musical.

“It was kind of great,” said Rosenstein, 25. “It stopped me from over thinking.”

After she got her undergraduate degree at Brown, Rosenstein figured she needed more training and took up acting in Brown’s MFA program, which the school runs in conjunction with Trinity Rep.

“You want to be an actor who sings,” said Rosenstein, “and who can bring truth to the role.”

She felt so-called straight acting could help that happen. For her final project at Brown, she sang selections from “Cabaret” and teachers Brian McEleney and Stephen Berenson showed her how to bring her acting skills to the songs.

“It was invaluable,” she said.

Rosenstein was hired for the tour back in April. She said she had done her final project by then and her teachers were nice enough to give her a degree before the semester was out so she could go on tour.

Rosenstein, who’s from Manhattan, plays Nessarose in the show, the wheelchair-bound sister of Elphaba, who becomes the green wicked witch. “Wicked” offers the back story of the “Wizard of Oz” from the point of view of the witches.

“I’m just trying to make a life on the road,” she said. “There are times when it takes its toll, and times when you embrace it.”

But there’s also the thrill of landing a major tour right out of school.

“It’s been amazing,” she said. “It’s been beyond exciting to be part of this.”

Wicked musical tour will be in Providence RI until January 12, 2014. From here the tour moves to Pittsburgh, PA from January 15 to February 09, 2014. Hurry to Buy Wicked Providence Performing Arts Center Tickets Online and Enjoy the record-breaking, the most popular musical ever.

Wicked second national touring production all set to open Wednesday, October 09, 2013 at Music Hall Kansas City. Hayley Podschun plays one of the leading role Glinda, the good witch, originally from Kansas is back in town with the touring company. Wicked musical will be in Kansas City, MO for a 3-week run from October 09 to October 27, 2013.

Podschun made her Broadway debut when she was all of 12 years old. As a member of the Von Trapp family in the 1998 revival of “The Sound of Music,” the formidably talented former student at the Miller Marley School of Dance and Voice had made a crucial first step in a musical-theater career.

Podschun graduated from Blue Valley North High School and after only a year of college in Boston she auditioned for the national tour of “Hairspray” and was hired. It was one of those “and I never looked back” moments.

Since then she has racked up some impressive Broadway credits: revivals in 2008 of “Sunday in the Park With George” and “Pal Joey” (directed by Joe Mantello), a 2011 revival of “Anything Goes” and last year, a new original musical, “Chaplin.”

In “Wicked” Podschun plays Glinda, the good witch, opposite Jennifer DiNoia as Elphaba, the misunderstood outsider who becomes the wicked witch. Podschun said the nice thing about this tour, in which she was again directed by Mantello, is that the actors are not seen as more than interchangeable parts.

“Whenever they get a new Glinda or Elphaba, they really want you to bring yourself to the role,” she said. “They don’t want you to do anything you’ve seen before. They want you to bring your own personality. So I get to to use my little weird quirks, my own comedy. I don’t have to be someone else. I get to be the weird self that I am at home with my friends. … Her arc is really fun because she starts so innocent and wide-eyed and then things change and she grows to this lady.” she said.

“Wicked” will be at the Music Hall Kansas City for an extended run of 19 days, which Podschun said will give her a chance to explore what’s new in Kansas City. “This will be the longest I’ve been home since college,” she said.

“My parents come to see me where my show’s at because I get maybe one day off, if that. I’m kind of excited to see the city because I haven’t been back in so long.

Curt Hansen in Wicked as Fiyero

Curt Hansen in Wicked as Fiyero

BWW author, Heidi Scheuermann recently spoke with Curt Hansen who plays Fiyero, the male lead, in the National Tour production of Wicked. Read the interview Below:

You’re fairly new to this cast for the national tour of WICKED. You’ve been with them for a little over a month. What has your experience been like so far?
It’s been great! Everyone’s very welcoming. It’s such a new, such a different thing to replace someone in a show. It’s kind of like you’re a kid, and even though it’s never happened to me but, you like move schools or something and go to a new school. It’s kind of that feeling of like everyone’s really nice but you’re still, you know, the stranger in something that, in basically a family. So it can be kind of daunting coming in, but everyone’s been really great and welcomed me with open arms and I hope that I’m fitting in rather well. I think I am. I hope I’m not delusional though.

So this is your second national tour, the first was NEXT TO NORMAL which you also had a run in on Broadway, and you also have done HAIRSPRAY on Broadway. So you’re not new to show business, but what is it like to now be a part of one of the most popular shows in existence?
It’s awesome. I’m really lucky. It’s kind of been a dream of mine to do this show. When it first came out I was I think in middle school, maybe even high school, when I went to go see it. Our choir group went to go see it as a group, and you know I always wanted to be in it and now that I am it’s kind of surreal. I had hoped it would happen some day, but I didn’t know if it would happen this soon. It’s cool. I’m really thankful for the opportunity, and also to get to travel with the show is great because so many people come to see it. And it’s such a thrill because it’s such a big show that audiences are always crazy and they go crazy for it, they love it. It’s always full which is great, and it’s just a very rewarding show to do.

What was your first impression of WICKED when you saw it for the first time?
Oh, it was so impressive. It was before I had even started doing theatre myself. The music was cool, it was new. I feel like it was kind of the first show that I had seen that wasn’t the typical old musical like OKLAHOMA and stuff. I think it was just the fact that something could be, I don’t want to say relevant but, relevant and cool and also exciting but with like pop music. It was something that was so different than what I had seen and what I was exposed to being from Wisconsin. All around it was just so impressive.

What were some of the other musicals that you were exposed to as a kid?
I mean we did, my whole family kind of took part in the community theatre, which was really cool. My older brother and my younger sister were acting in the shows. My dad sometimes would be in the show but he ran the light board and did all the crew stuff. My mom would work backstage. We did like ANYTHING GOES and THE KING AND I and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I did LES MIS in high school, which was cool but I mean more traditional musicals that you grow up with that a lot of school do and community theaters.

It’s cool that your whole family was involved in theatre. That’s kind of rare. You don’t normally see entire families who are involved a whole lot.
It’s really rare especially when my first semester in college I was going for pre-med and my parents wanted me to do theatre instead.

That’s sort of backwards from what you usually hear!
Yeah, but I think I made the right choice. I don’t want to be anyone’s doctor, and no one wants me to be their doctor!

So let’s talk about your character a little bit. You play Fiyero who is our dashing male lead. What is his place in WICKED?
In the story he’s basically I guess the apex of this love triangle between the two witches. It’s something that I’m, not struggling with, but trying to find his importance in the show because… It’s funny, the other day I went to go watch Dee [Roscioli] who just left as Elphaba… I went to go watch the rest of her first act and I realized how, I don’t want to say how little I do during the show, but I don’t do as much as everyone else does and it kind of made me take a step back and really re-evaluate what I am on stage and how important everything I do is. I like to think that I’m the catalyst to the story really kind of going because as soon as I’m out there stuff kind of starts hitting the fan. I kind of help, you know I fall for Elphaba right away and kind of help her do things that I normally wouldn’t do, and kind of add that extra… I don’t know what the word is… drive to the show? But maybe it’s just in my head and maybe that’s just what I tell myself. I think that the most important thing is the love triangle and how two girls… basically we’re all just friends and I end up falling for both of them, but in the end obviously I go with Elphaba because she’s more interesting. Not to say that Glinda isn’t, but there’s different needs that I need fulfilled as the show goes on.
