Jaime Rosenstein is a Brown University graduate and a veteran of the joint Brown-Trinity Rep program. Actress Jaime Rosenstein auditioned for “Wicked” on a Monday, was told she got the job on Tuesday, and was flying off to Dallas two days later to join the national tour of the popular musical.

“It was kind of great,” said Rosenstein, 25. “It stopped me from over thinking.”

After she got her undergraduate degree at Brown, Rosenstein figured she needed more training and took up acting in Brown’s MFA program, which the school runs in conjunction with Trinity Rep.

“You want to be an actor who sings,” said Rosenstein, “and who can bring truth to the role.”

She felt so-called straight acting could help that happen. For her final project at Brown, she sang selections from “Cabaret” and teachers Brian McEleney and Stephen Berenson showed her how to bring her acting skills to the songs.

“It was invaluable,” she said.

Rosenstein was hired for the tour back in April. She said she had done her final project by then and her teachers were nice enough to give her a degree before the semester was out so she could go on tour.

Rosenstein, who’s from Manhattan, plays Nessarose in the show, the wheelchair-bound sister of Elphaba, who becomes the green wicked witch. “Wicked” offers the back story of the “Wizard of Oz” from the point of view of the witches.

“I’m just trying to make a life on the road,” she said. “There are times when it takes its toll, and times when you embrace it.”

But there’s also the thrill of landing a major tour right out of school.

“It’s been amazing,” she said. “It’s been beyond exciting to be part of this.”

Wicked musical tour will be in Providence RI until January 12, 2014. From here the tour moves to Pittsburgh, PA from January 15 to February 09, 2014. Hurry to Buy Wicked Providence Performing Arts Center Tickets Online and Enjoy the record-breaking, the most popular musical ever.

More than 60 people lined up near the building’s front door shortly before 7 a.m., each anxiously awaiting the chance to buy tickets for the smash-hit Broadway musical “Wicked,” which begins its six-week tour at the Smith Center on August 29 and continue through October 07, 2012

“When I heard it was coming to town, I knew I had to see it,” said Las Vegas resident Katherine Muniz, who was first in line Saturday morning. “I heard it was going to sell out, so I figured I’d get here at 4 a.m. just in case.” Muniz said she planned to buy a ticket for herself and one for her mother as a birthday gift. “I’m super excited. I’m glad that there’s more culture coming into town and more things for locals to do,” she said.

Wicked’s arrival is a major moment for the nascent Smith Center, which opened in March, said president Myron Martin, who was busy snapping pictures Saturday morning while wearing a “Wicked”-inspired green tie.

Because of the show’s popularity, tickets are expected to sell out and the Smith Center decided to hold an on-site sale Saturday morning for die-hard fans before releasing the remaining tickets for sale online at 10 a.m.

After purchasing her ticket and seeing the inside of the Smith Center for the first time, Sandy Mullally said she can’t wait for “Wicked” to arrive later this year. “It’s past time we’ve had something like this,” she said.

Wicked is currently performing on tour in Denver, CO and at Buell Theatre Still Stands Strong. Wicked Cast: Starring Mamie Parris, Alli Mauzey, Andy Kelso, Liz McCartney, Emily Ferranti, Paul Slade Smith, Mark Jacoby and Justin Brill. Here is the review by Lisa Kennedy @ Denver Post Theater Critic.

“Wicked” is an outcast tale, a female friendship parable, a story of corruption and chicanery by authorities we — rather the denizens of the Emerald City — put our trust in. It is a wry reconsideration of good (is it overrated?) and evil (is it misunderstood?) — or at least L. Frank Baum’s version of that eternal tussle found in his classic novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”

On opening night this production, starring Mamie Parris and Alli Mauzey, was quick-witted, generous and deft with the laughs, of which there are many. Still, I couldn’t help wishing for a better blend of the tender and the hilarious.

Parris and Mauzey portray Elphaba and Galinda. Eventually, Galinda adopts her better-known moniker, Glinda. Elphaba will claim her name, her fame or infamy, as the Wicked Witch of the West. Parris has a rich voice that fills out Elphaba’s sorrow and youthful angst. Mauzey brings stop-on-a-dime comedic timing to Galinda’s antics. She’s a tireless, rapid-fire trouper.

“Wicked” wastes little time in evoking one of the more indelible images of the movie, with winged monkeys climbing above the stage. But memories of Dorothy Gale, Kansas and Oz are quickly turned topsy turvy. The sets are evocative: spectacle without the clutter.

As the play opens, Glinda confirms the Wicked Witch of the West’s death by water bucket. “Wicked” then unfolds as a flashback about how the two came to know each other.

The Green and the Good meet when they arrive at Shiz University. The jade-hued daughter of the Munchkin governor has been sent to school ostensibly to keep an eye on her wheelchair-bound, fair-haired younger sister, Nessarose (Emily Ferranti). There is antagonism at first sight, then a tentative friendship and, later, something of a competing love interest in popular guy Fiyero (Andy Kelso, a graduate of Aurora’s Eaglecrest High School), who turns out to be deeper than his deep pockets.

Elphaba is gifted and the school’s Madame Morrible sees it and seizes upon it. The youngster’s talent might even get her an audience with the Wizard (Mark Jacoby). Liz McCartney as the full-figured doyen of the school takes to her role with a brassy aplomb.

Paul Slade Smith makes Dr. Dillamond touching as a horned professor soon to become a target. The rules are changing in Oz, and magical animals are no longer appreciated.

Three songs have approached classic status. This despite the critical ink spilled since the play’s 2003 debut debating whether the musical has any memorable tunes. A great many reviews said no, but then critics are used to losing arguments with audiences.

Wicked is currently performing on tour in Los Angeles, CA and Jacksonville, FL. And the tour is next set to open at Austin’s Bass Concert Hall on January 25.

Below is an interview with Wicked’s Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Don Amendolia, by BroadwayWorld.

Wicked Don Amendolia

Wicked Don Amendolia

You have been with the tour as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz for two years. How has life on the road been treating you?
Life on the road has been terrific. It’s been great fun to see other cities, their museums, restaurants and of course happy audiences all across North America. A rare treat.

Do you feel that your interpretation or insight into the Wizard’s character has changed with your time in the role? How so?
While any actor hopes his insight into a character deepens with time while playing a role, I did my homework early on and I think my interpretation of the Wizard hasn’t changed too much. At least I hope not. There’s a big difference between embellishment and refinement. I hope I’ve refined him more.

Some of Wicked’s actors have stated they chose to develop their interpretation of their characters based solely upon the musical’s portrayals, as opposed to reading Gregory Maguire’s novels and drawing additional inspiration there. Have you read the Wicked novels, and if so, did you draw inspiration from them, or perhaps the Wizard of Oz film?
I had read Gregory Maguire’s amazing novel when it was first published, before it became a musical, so by the time I read the show script I was aware of how much my character differed from medium to medium. Over all, I tend to remember who the Wizard was from the movie; more of a snake-oil salesman, carnival shaman who’s trying to hold on to his accidental world. He’s not a bad man, he’s just not a very good Wizard.

How has your experience in Wicked compared to other stage productions?
Honestly, there is no comparison to other shows. Wicked is now a worldwide phenomenon that has touched millions in ways I can only guess at. It’s been a singular experience in every way.

The Wizard, as portrayed in Wicked, is somewhat blinded by power, though a sentimental man who unknowingly wrongs one of his own. If the Wizard knew of this relation from the beginning, how do you think it would have impacted the outcome of Oz’s history?
Power is more seductive than anything else to the Wizard and at its core, absolute power corrupts absolutely. He may be a sentimental man but by the time Elphaba comes to Oz I think the Wizard is hip-deep in the panic that he may lose it all. He may regret it and hindsight is 20-20 but by then it’s too late. He is finally powerless to change anything.
