Wicked musical returns to Boston for it’s 5th visit and will play at the Boston Opera House through July 23, 2017.

The musical’s story is based on Concord author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 imaginative revisionist novel that takes a different look at the characters and land in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” and Frank L. Baum’s 1900 children’s book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and its sequels. The musical has been seen by more than 50 million worldwide since it first burst onto stage. The show recently celebrated its 13th anniversary on Broadway where it continues to run at the Gershwin Theatre.

The Boston Opera House was packed at Wednesday night’s press opening of the current Boston engagement. Faithful theatergoers whooped with glee at the familiar songs and marveled at the elements of spectacle that enhance the compelling story. It’s the tale of the unlikely bond between Elphaba, aka “the Wicked Witch of the West,” and Glinda The Good, their sisterhood, as well as social justice, good and evil, and the rewards of following one’s heart and best instincts.

Elphaba has a mysterious power that she doesn’t understand until she is given a book of spells only she can read. The best friends go off to meet the Wizard, but Elphaba discovers he is a charlatan who deludes his people by blaming their problems on the animals.

When Elphaba realizes that she must oppose the Wizard, he gives out the fake news that she is “Wicked.” Elphaba and Glinda battle over their classmate, the sexy Prince Fiyero — who none-the-less has a brain and moral backbone. When Glinda loses him, she decides to stay on the Wizard’s team. Their adventures include several references to Dorothy, who never appears on stage but fits obliquely into the theatrical version.

Touring musical is a ‘Wicked’ good show – Reviewed via HispanicBusiness.com.

A decade after opening on Broadway, “Wicked,” the musical back-story of “The Wizard of Oz,” is still vibrant and exciting, with absolutely gorgeous music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

The touring production that opened this week at The Boston Opera House had some uneven singing, but better acting and dancing than in the two other touring shows I’ve seen.

Jenn Gambatese’s Glinda the Good is a terrific blend of a ditzy exterior and a genuinely nice person hidden within. The character is also hilarious. A Broadway veteran, Gambatese is comfortable on stage and well-versed in handling the musical demands of a show like “Wicked.” Her soprano is smooth and warm, bringing to life the opening number, “No One Mourns the Wicked,” as well as “Thank Goodness” and the widely sung, and very funny, “Popular.”

This is definitely a “Wicked” good production worth seeing, even if you’ve seen the musical before. But without a crystal ball to see Luff, the Elphaba regular, it’s hard to say if the chemistry will be as good as it was between Gambatese and Harris, and whether Luff’s singing as Elphaba will be even better.

Witchy tale wows crowd at Boston Opera House. Jackie Burns and Chandra Lee Schwartz are Amazing in Wicked at the Boston Opera House.

Jackie Burns as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, and Chandra Lee Schwartz as Galinda, in “Wicked,’’ at the Boston Opera House

Jackie Burns as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, and Chandra Lee Schwartz as Galinda, in “Wicked,’’ at the Boston Opera House

By now, seven years into the “Wicked’’ phenomenon, it is clear that this revisionist take on “The Wizard of Oz,’’ one of the most potent myths of the 20th century, has established a pretty potent 21st-century myth of its own.

Boston Opera House is full with the response of the largely female audience to “Wicked’’. While it’s an uneven production, the reality is that each iteration of this musical rises or falls on the strength of its Elphaba, a.k.a. the Wicked Witch — and in Jackie Burns, this “Wicked’’ boasts an Elphaba who could go broom to broom against Idina Menzel herself. Whether she is belting out a truly stunning version of “Defying Gravity’’ to close the first act or cracking your heart by confessing, brokenly, that “I’m Not That Girl,’’ Burns brings a richness of emotional coloration to the role of the green-skinned outcast who discovers that she has supernatural powers. The rest of the cast does not match Burns’s level of radiant intensity, and there are some dead spots between the musical numbers.

Chandra Lee Schwartz plays the other key role, Glinda as a kind of cross between Reese Witherspoon’s Elle in “Legally Blonde’’ and Teri Garr’s Inga in Mel Brooks’s “Young Frankenstein.’’ Luckily for this “Wicked,’’ Jackie Burns retains full possession of her powers of song, from start to finish.

Wicked is performing at Boston Opera House in Boston, MA Through Oct. 17. Tickets $38-$108
