Wicked Day is back for its sixth year of family Halloween-inspired fun later this month, with a jam packed schedule of face-painting, storytelling and magic.

The annual free event, which takes place on 30 October, is organised by the hit musical Wicked in aid of a chosen environmental cause. Funds raised on the day will be donated to The Woodland Trust’s Heartwood Forest Appeal for the second year running. This year’s Wicked Day event will take place between 12 noon and 4pm on Sunday 30 October at the London Film Museum, County Hall, situated on the South Bank and overlooked by the iconic London Eye. 2011’s Wicked Day will feature a host of Wicked and Halloween-themed events based around the Shiz University Class of 2011.

Suitable for families and children of all ages, Wicked-lovers can enjoy monkey workshops, a storytelling classroom in association with Wicked’s Young Writers’ Award, Shiz karaoke, an interactive Shiz playground area, plus magicians and appearances from the cast.

Those looking to be really green can even have their faces painted or experience what it’s like to be a witch, good or bad, with Galinda-fying parlours.

Wicked has been playing at the Apollo Victoria theatre since 2006 and tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. Two girls – one green and misunderstood, the other blonde and bubbly – meet at the Shiz University and form an unlikely friendship. Gina Beck and Matt Willis are to join the London company of Wicked as Glinda and Fiyero, respectively, and Desmond Barrit is to return as the Wizard, beginning performances Dec. 12.

The pair are joined in the cast by Lillie Flynn as Nessarose, Christopher Howell as Doctor Dillamond and Adam Pettigrew as Boq. Desmond Barrit, who first starred in Wicked in 2008, returns to the role of The Wizard.

Rachel Tucker, who won this year’s Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Take Over in a Role will, as previously reported, remain in the role of Elphaba. Julie Legrand also stays on as Madame Morrible.

Beck, who is currently appearing on the London stage in The Belle’s Stratagem at Southwark Playhouse, recently finished a two-year run starring as Christine Daaé in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre. She made her debut in 2006 as Cosette in Les Miserables and performed in the show’s 25th anniversary celebrations at The O2 last year.

Matt Willis came to prominence as a member of the BRIT Award-winning band Busted and has subsequently appeared on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. Trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, he made his West End debut in Flashdance and has recently appeared in the UK tour of Footloose.

Barrit previously starred in Wicked in 2008/9. He recently played Falstaff in Henry IV Parts One and Two for peter Hall at the Bath Theatre Royal.

Wicked has now played over 2000 performances and celebrates five years in the West End on 27 September 2011. Wicked Musical will be returning to Atlanta on Sept. 14, for the performamnces in Fox Theatre for a four-week stay. Wicked will be playing through October 09, 2011.

The adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” last packed the Fox for a month-long run in 2008 and tours nearly 20 cities per year. Its supremacy on Broadway also remains steadfast – for the week ending Sept. 4, the show that turns eight next month played to 94.5 percent capacity crowds and grossed $1.6 million, according to The Broadway League.

The appeal of “Wicked” – which unravels the story of how the “The Wizard of Oz’s” Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) became evil and Glinda (initially Galinda) was anointed the Good Witch of the North – likely has something to do with its theme of alienation, which Jacoby thinks is especially relatable among young women.
