Wicked, one of the most anticipated musicals currently staged in Australia, brings the “untold story” of the Witches of Oz to Brisbane.

Following critically acclaimed seasons in both Melbourne and Sydney, the Brisbane production also brings a collection of famous faces to the local stage.

Jemma Rix joins the cast of Wicked for the Brisbane season

Bert Newton stars as The Wizard alongside Lucy Durack (Glinda), Jemma Rix (Elphaba), Tim Campbell (Fiyero) and Maggie Kirkpatrick (Madame Morrible).

Following it’s limited Brisbane season, Wicked will continue its Australian tour, moving to Adelaide before taking in Perth.

Ms Rix is the star of Wicked the Musical which opens in Brisbane in January next year. “We are getting everyone aware of Wicked because we are going to Brisbane and I know it is still a little bit of a distance, but it is such a massive spectacle and a big event that we can’t unfortunately take it to every town,” Ms Rix said.

“We want to spread the word. It has been such a long running show it actually left us in Melbourne for about 14 months so it was like having a day job,” Mr Dobson said.

Wicked relates the untold story of the witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey; how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

For Ms Rix landing the role of Elphaba was an amazing achievement for the performer who got her career start in various amateur musical theatre productions while growing up.

“It is one of those roles that everybody knows about in the musical theatre industry. A role that I think lots of people fought for and auditioned for and even in the audition process there were people that were dressing up; they weren’t actually green but they were trying to make themselves look like Elphaba.”
