Wicked is based on a best-selling book, entitled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The tale stands as a wonderful alternative to the (just about) more famous Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the timeless book and motion picture written by L. Frank Baum. Maguire tips his hat to the creator of the concept by naming his Wicked heroine, Elphaba, after Baum (“L-Fa-Ba”).
