Wicked touring San Antonio for almost 3-week run to the Majestic Theatre from February 16, 2011 and is in the final week of the performance closing on March 06, 2011.
The Wicked Witch of the West of the musical “Wicked” is very much her own entity. Wicked musical is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel and which finally gave her the dignity of a first name — Elphaba.
In the show, she is a misunderstood, idealistic young woman, ostracized because of her green skin and lack of social skills. She finally comes into her own when she realizes that she has become an unwitting pawn in a political game waged by the deceitful Wizard of Oz.
The deeply satisfying tale is unfolding on the Majestic Theatre stage. It’s a welcome return — the show last swung through two years ago, and fans have been clamoring to see it again ever since.
Anne Brummel plays Elphaba with great spirit and wit. She also raises the requisite goose bumps with her renderings of “Defying Gravity,” the show-stopper in which the witch first takes to the sky, and “No Good Deed,” in which she decides to embrace the misconceptions about her.
Natalie Daradich is a lot of fun to watch as Glinda, particularly in the makeover scene, though there’s more to her than comic relief. Daradich also captures Glinda’s growth from a young woman so selfish that her knees give out when she doesn’t get her way to someone who actually stands up to the Wizard.
The special effects and the overall look of the show remain a great big wow, from Glinda’s arrival via giant bubble (accompanied by lots of soap bubbles) all the way to the low-tech way Dorothy’s assault on the witch is portrayed.
It’s a fantastic show.
