Wicked, Broadway blockbuster, the musical story of Oz before Dorothy arrived, is coming to Vancouver BC Canada.

The play, based on the novel by Gregory MaGuire, will have its run at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from Wednesday, June 1 to Sunday June 26.

Wicked has won 35 major awards including a Grammy and three Tonys. The musical is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Take Me Out, Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Vagina Monologues) and features musical staging by Tony® Award winner Wayne Cilento (Aida, The Who’s Tommy, How To Succeed…). Wicked, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Disney’s Enchanted, Academy Award winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and book by Winnie Holzman (“My So Called Life,” “Once And Again” and “thirtysomething”), is based on the best-selling 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.

Broadway blockbuster ‘Wicked’ returns for a 5-week run to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center in downtown Orlando from February 23, 2011.

“We’ve been on the road for six years, so we pretty much have it down to a science,” Company Manager Steve Quinn told.

Most of the crew is local — about 80 out of 100. So the 20 touring crew members have a lot of explaining to do. “They assist the locals in assembling this big jigsaw puzzle,” Quinn said.

Perhaps one of the most familiar props to “Wicked” lovers is the big dragon, which was already in place Tuesday. But if you haven’t seen the musical, a lot of the backstage “stuff” probably doesn’t ring any bells. The bottom line is that everything the audience sees plays a part in revealing a little bit about the Wizard of Oz.

“There’s several “ah-ha” moments, I call them, that you kind of go, ‘Oh I never thought about that,’” Quinn said. “We figure out if Glinda the Good Witch is really good, and is the Wicked Witch really wicked. You need to come find that out.”
