Wicked musical opens on Wednesday, February 01 at the Plaza Theatre. It’s expected to bring thousands of people into the downtown area who are expected to spend some green. Wicked will play in El Paso, TX through Sunday, February 12, 2012.

El Paso is such a small town,and for such a huge thing to come to El Paso is a great thing,” said Sergio Contreras, who plans on seeing the play. “Ithink it’s such a great thing because it’s such an odd-ball thing. El Paso is about the military and stuff like that.”

The musical is expected to bring in $2 million, and about 30,000 people have bought tickets for the first two weeks. The El Paso Times says people in the Sun City are also known to buy last-minute tickets.

Broadway musical Wicked swoops into El Paso’s Plaza Theatre February 01, 2012. Wicked is the story of two witches, Elphaba, the unfortunate girl with the green skin, and the blonde and perfect Glinda. One – born with emerald-green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, and how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

The first weekend El Paso TXperformances are nearly sold out, and the prices for high-demand performances have gone up.

“When ‘Wicked’ leaves here on Feb. 12, it will be the new record holder for national touring Broadway productions in El Paso,” said Brian Crowe, assistant general manager of El Paso’s Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We’ve had a tremendous response and are looking for a very successful two-week run.”
