All time Hit musical Wicked will finish its mammoth run at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney towards the end of next month.

The Broadway show opened in the capital of New South Wales almost a year ago, during which time it has been seen by more than half a million people, including a host of celebrities such as former Australia cricket star Glenn McGrath and his family.

Life Is A Rollercoaster singer and former Boyzone member Ronan Keating also recently watched the show, before going backstage to meet the cast.

The musical charts the lives of two friends who meet in Oz and go on to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Despite the continued popularity of Wicked, the current run must come to an end on September 26th 2010. A surge in demand for some of the last minute accommodation Sydney has available is expected in the build-up to the final performance.

Queensland’s most anticipated musical theatre extravaganza, Wicked, is officially set to fly north of the border to open in all its emerald glory in the Lyric Theatre, QPAC in January 2011.

When the Australian production of Wicked arrives in Brisbane it will have played over 866 shows and will have been seen by well over 1 million people. Wicked’s record-breaking Australian run began in June, 2008 at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre, where it broke the city’s box office record and ran through August, 2009. The production transferred to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre on September 5, 2009 and will conclude its record-breaking run on September 12, 2010.

Australia’s favourite musical is about to reveal a new star. In March, Wicked will welcome Elisa Colla for her professional debut in the role of Nessarose, sister of Elphaba.

Only 21 years of age, Elisa graduated from the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) in 2009 and is thrilled to be cast in the role of Nessarose. While at AIM she appeared in the musicals Promises, Promises and Dusty: The Original Pop Diva, and her previous musical credits include Grease, Oklahoma! and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Elisa said, “I feel so lucky to be cast in this extraordinary show as my first professional musical. It is so magical! I can’t wait to slip into Nessarose’s costume and be a part of this glorious production.”

Penny McNamee, who has played Nessarose for more than 18 months since Wicked first opened in Melbourne in July 2008, is leaving the show to return to work in film and television. After performing Nessarose in almost 650 shows and winning a Green Room Award as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, Penny says she is going to miss her Wicked family. “I’m taking away such wonderful friendships from this show,” she said.

There is limited street parking available, and with the hustle and bustle of chinatown close by, you’d be hard pressed finding a spot unless you’re willing to do a few laps.

Parking is available at Capitol Square right next door to the theatre with an evening flat rate of $20.00 if you arrive after 6pm and leave before 12am. If you don’t mind a little walk, the best value car park around if you’re going to see Wicked the Musical at Capitol Theatre, Haymarket is Wilson Parking on Goulburn Street. They have a $15.00 evening flat rate if you arrive after 6pm and leave before 5am. To see how far you have to walk, view the location of this carpark at sydneyparking.info. From there you can search for other nearby car parks as well.

The cheapest parking however (within 1km) are 2 Wilson car parks. Citipark on 431 Kent St and Darling Park at 201 Sussex St, both have $9.00 evening flat rates.
