I’ve wanted to see “Wicked” for years, but every time I’ve been in New York, it has been completely sold out. So I was thrilled to find out that Wicked’s national tour was stopping in Sacramento this summer, which meant I could finally see the show everyone has been raving about and that Variety declared “a cultural phenomenon.”

Lottery tickets: A lottery for $25 orchestra seats will be held before every performance. To enter, visit the Community Center Box Office 2 1/2 hours before the performance. “Wicked” is a musical told from the perspective of the Witches of Oz, a sort of prequel to “The Wizard of Oz.”

But it’s so much more than just that. It’s a heart-felt and clever experience with something for everyone.

The show has perhaps the grandest costumes and set you’ll ever see but it also has quite a bit of depth as it tackles issues of contemporary relevance, ranging from diversity to political corruption to animal rights.

“Wicked” is as enjoyable as it is inspiring and I highly recommend it (for all ages). “Wicked” has won 35 major awards (including a Grammy and three Tony awards) and I am surprised it hasn’t won even more.

The Sacramento engagement of Wicked begins performances on Wednesday, May 23 and runs through June 17 at Sacramento Community Center Theater, 1301 L Street. The Sacramento engagement of Wicked features Nicole Parker as Elphaba (Joins the tour on May 18 in Denver), Alli Mauzey as Glinda, Liz McCartney as Madame Morrible, PJ Benjamin as The Wizard and Justin Brill as Boq.

Nicole Parker was last seen as Elphaba on Broadway. Mauzey starred as Glinda in both the Broadway and final San Francisco companies. McCartney’s Broadway credits include The Phantom Of The Opera, South Pacific, Mamma Mia!, Thoroughly Modern Millie. Benjamin comes to the Wicked tour directly from the Broadway company after playing The Wizard for 5 years.

Wicked, which had a hugely successful Broadway and touring run, will land in California Musical Theatre May 23-June 17, 2012.

In the 2011-12 Broadway Sacramento series, announced today, the popular musical prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” anchors the schedule of six shows. The four-week, 32-performance run of “Wicked” highlights the season’s new format, which has the other five productions running only one week. Each of those productions will be performed eight times.

Richard Lewis, executive producer of California Musical Theatre, predicted that this season will be particularly attractive to audiences. Season subscriptions and overall attendance have steadily declined for the Broadway Sacramento series over the past three years, forcing the shortened runs.

The final show of the season will be the long-awaited Sacramento debut of “Wicked.” Lewis said Broadway Series audiences have asked for the popular title for years.

“We announced ‘Wicked’ last September and the buzz has been really positive ever since,” Lewis said. “We feel we’re going to sell it out and sell it out very quickly.”
