Wicked Musical officially welcomed its brand new London cast on Thursday at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. To celebrate the new cast Wicked put on some extra performances through the Christmas holidays.

Former Glinda Louise Dearman returns to play Elphaba, making history as the first leading lady to have starred in both roles, and Gina Beck continues to star as Glinda.

Also joining the cast are Ben Freeman (Fiyero), Louise Plowright (Madame Morrible), Sam Lupton (Boq) and original cast member Katie Rowley Jones, who returns to the role of Nessarose. Keith Bartlett (The Wizard) and Christopher Howell (Doctor Dillamond) continue in their respective roles. Hayley Gallivan (Standby Elphaba) and Lucy van Gasse (Standby Glinda) have also joined the cast.

Desmond Barrit will play his final performance as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on Saturday 7 July. From Monday 9 July until Saturday 28 July, Christopher Howell will play the role.

An acclaimed classical actor, Keith Bartlett will make his West End musical debut in Wicked. He previously starred in Stephen Schwartz’s musical Godspell, as John The Baptist, in Basingstoke in 1998. His many celebrated appearances with the RSC include Henry VI Parts 1, 2 & 3 and Richard III, as part of ‘The Histories’ season at Stratford-upon-Avon and The Roundhouse, The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest and Pericles. His numerous other theatre credits include, for Headlong: Romeo & Juliet; for Shakespeare’s Globe: King James Bible recital and A New World: A Life of Thomas Paine; for the Donmar Warehouse: A Lie of the Mind, The Front Page and Glengarry Glen Ross; for The National Theatre: Mary Stuart, The Crucible, Piano and Murmuring Judges, and, for Cheek by Jowl: Macbeth, Philoctetes, Twelfth Night, The Tempest and The Cid. His television and film appearances include: Silent Witness, New Tricks, The Bill and Truly Madly Deeply.

Based on the novel by Gregory Maquire, Wicked has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman and is directed by Joe Mantello.

Wicked extends booking period at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre, Wicked London GL Tickets now on sale until Saturday 27 April 2013.

Wicked opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre 27 Sep 2006, following previews from 7 Sep, and has since been seen by almost 4 million people and grossed in excess of £154 million at the UK Box Office.

Wicked will perform throughout the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations (Saturday 2 June – Tuesday 5 June 2012), and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with an extra matinee added on Thursday 26 July 2012 at 2.30pm in place of the Friday 27 July 2012 evening performance.

Wicked celebrates its landmark 5th birthday to night (Tuesday 27 September 2011) at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre. Wicked grossed £145 million at the box office.

Wicked premiered on 27 September 2006 (with previews from 7 September) in one of the busiest ever years for West End musical openings. Avenue Q; Cabaret; Caroline, or Change; Daddy Cool; Dirty Dancing; Evita; Porgy and Bess; Monty Python’s Spamalot; The Sound of Music and Sunday in The Park with George also all opened that year. With the 9 July 2011 closure of Dirty Dancing, Wicked has outlasted all of these shows and its popularity is greater than ever.

Gina Beck and Matt Willis are to join the London company of Wicked as Glinda and Fiyero, respectively, and Desmond Barrit is to return as the Wizard, beginning performances Dec. 12.

The pair are joined in the cast by Lillie Flynn as Nessarose, Christopher Howell as Doctor Dillamond and Adam Pettigrew as Boq. Desmond Barrit, who first starred in Wicked in 2008, returns to the role of The Wizard.

Rachel Tucker, who won this year’s Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Take Over in a Role will, as previously reported, remain in the role of Elphaba. Julie Legrand also stays on as Madame Morrible.

Beck, who is currently appearing on the London stage in The Belle’s Stratagem at Southwark Playhouse, recently finished a two-year run starring as Christine Daaé in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre. She made her debut in 2006 as Cosette in Les Miserables and performed in the show’s 25th anniversary celebrations at The O2 last year.

Matt Willis came to prominence as a member of the BRIT Award-winning band Busted and has subsequently appeared on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. Trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, he made his West End debut in Flashdance and has recently appeared in the UK tour of Footloose.

Barrit previously starred in Wicked in 2008/9. He recently played Falstaff in Henry IV Parts One and Two for peter Hall at the Bath Theatre Royal.

Wicked has now played over 2000 performances and celebrates five years in the West End on 27 September 2011. The Broadway musical, which opened in London on 27 September 2006 (previews from 6 September), tells the “untold story” of the Witches of Oz – popular blonde Glinda, aka the Good Witch of the North, and her spin-victim friend Elphaba – who were both immortalised in the 1939 film classic The Wizard of Oz.

Sources revealed that the Wicked musical is to welcome an almost entirely new cast as of February 2011.

Mark Evans as Fiyero was announced last month as a replacement for Lee Mead, but the show’s official website has now unveiled the remaining actors set to tread the boards of the Apollo Victoria Theatre next year.

Zoe Rainey will appear as Nessarose, with Ben Stott as Boq and Chloe Taylor as standby Glinda.

Meanwhile, Rachel Tucker and Louise Dearman will remain in the roles of Elphaba and Glinda respectively after having signed new contracts.

Other new members of the company – which takes over on February 7th 2011 – include Clive Carter, Gemma Atkins, Andrew Bryant, Daniel Jones, Jasmine Kerr and Gareth Chart.

Last month, Wicked was named as the best long-running show in the West End at the BroadwayWorld.com UK Awards, beating Phantom of the Opera into second place.

Wicked has been voted the best long-running show in the West End at an awards ceremony this week.

The untold story of the witches of Oz was picked as top in this category at the BroadwayWorld.com UK Awards, closely followed by Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.

Meanwhile, the overall title of Best Musical went to Love Never Dies, with Les Miserables named top in the Best Revival of a Musical category.

This comes after Wicked was also named Most Popular Show in the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards – as voted for by the public – as well as Best West End Show at the WhatsonStage.com Awards and takes its total number of gongs worldwide to 35.

Now in its fifth year, an estimated three million people have seen Wicked in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.

In October 2010, it broke a West End record for the highest ever recorded weekly gross takings, brining in £923,612 in the week ending October 30th.

Wicked, recently voted London’s ‘Most Popular Show’ (2010 Laurence Olivier Awards) and ‘Best West End Show’ (2010 Whatsonstage.com Awards), welcomes its brand new London cast from tonight (29 March, 2010).

Wicked now stars: Rachel Tucker (Elphaba), Louise Dearman (Glinda), Lee Mead* (Fiyero), Julie Legrand (Madame Morrible), Clive Carter (The Wizard), Cassandra Compton (Nessarose), Julian Forsyth (Doctor Dillamond), George Ure (Boq), Nikki Davis-Jones (Elphaba Standby) and Sarah Earnshaw (Glinda Standby).

*Lee Mead will play Fiyero from Monday 10 May 2010. Until then the role will be played by Lewis Bradley. Cast subject to change from 7 February 2011.
