Wicked Musical currently Stops in San Francisco CA for almost 4-week run. Wicked will be performing at Orpheum Theater SF through February 17, 2013. Wicked musical play at Orpheum Theater reviewed by Robert Hurwitt – Here is the review:

Elphaba, the green girl, flies high and sings with beautifully modulated power as she becomes the Wicked Witch of the West in the touring production of “Wicked” that opened Thursday at the Orpheum Theatre. Glinda the Good matches her vocally and dazzles the audience with charm. And that may be the bigger story.

Understudy Cassie Okenka rose from the ensemble to don Glinda’s blond locks, pink frocks and sunnily self-absorbed personality when co-star Patti Murin was sidelined with the flu Thursday. From her glittering first notes through every step of an assured performance, Okenka more than gave the audience its money’s worth at the latest show in SHN’s season.

It was another nice turn in San Francisco’s long relationship with composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz and librettist Winnie Holzman’s adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s dystopian “Oz” prequel. The show had its world premier here in 2003, before going on to become one of Broadway’s hottest tickets, and returned for a prolonged run in ’09.

It’s very much the same, well-oiled production as last time, staged with quick-paced clarity by Joe Mantello and inventively boisterous dance by Wayne Cilento. The great smoke-breathing mechanical dragon looms above the massive gears and clockworks of Eugene Lee’s Victorian steam-punk set. The cast creates sharp individual portraits in Susan Hilferty’s scruffy peasant, odd animal and glittering Emerald City costumes.

The heart of “Wicked” is the story of Elphaba and Glinda, accidental roommates and rivals in wizardry and romance at Shiz University. Dee Roscioli shines as the shy but assertive, sharp-tongued green girl, the eternal outsider blessed – and cursed – with magical powers she’s only learning to use.

Though she’s played Elphaba more often than anyone else, Roscioli keeps the role fresh and immediate, whether navigating her uneasy growing closeness with Glinda or confronting the villainies of Kim Zimmer’s outrageously formidable Madame Morrible and the vaudevillian con-man Wizard of Kevin McMahon (also filling in for an ailing regular).

Mauzey and Dodd Lead WICKED in San Francisco

Wicked veterans Marcie Dodd and Alli Mauzey will be San Francisco’s new witches in the hit musical beginning June 29, 2010. This will be a reunion for Dodd and Mauzey in their roles as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, and will mark the first time the two actresses are back on stage opposite each other since they played the roles on Broadway from November 2008 – February 2009. The actresses will take a final bow with Wicked when it closes on September 5, 2010.

Marcie Dodd recently launched Wicked’s acclaimed Second National Tour in the role of Elphaba, having previously performed the role on Broadway, with the Los Angeles company, and with the First National Tour. Dodd’s other credits include HAIRSPRAY, WE WILL ROCK YOU, GREASE, and multiple performing and recording projects with Universal Studios and Disney Entertainment.

Alli Mauzey recently returned to the Broadway company of Wicked as Glinda, and then played the title role in CINDERELLA alongside the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. She also starred as the love-crazed Lenora in the musical CRY-BABY on Broadway, for which she won the Theatre World Award and was nominated for a Drama League Award. Mauzey also originated the role of Lenora at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, where she won the Theatre Critics Circle Award. She played Brenda in HAIRSPRAY on Broadway and the first national tour.

Wicked also features Cliffton Hall as Fiyero, Paul Slade Smith as Doctor Dillamond, DeeDee Magno Hall as Nessarose, and Etai BenShlomo as Boq.

“Wicked” is closing its record-breaking San Francisco run. The return engagement of the insanely popular “Wizard of Oz” prequel will close on Sept. 5 after some 660 performances in the city where the show was first born.

Theater officials say the blockbuster musical must close to make room for the revival of “West Side Story” and other touring shows in the SHN/Best of Broadway series this fall. So far, more than 1 million theatergoers have seen “Wicked” in San Francisco, and the production, which began in January 2009, has grossed more than $75 million.

For the record, “The Phantom of the Opera,” which ran for five years, still holds the record for the longest-running Broadway musical in San Francisco history.

“Wicked,” dubbed the “best musical of the decade” by Entertainment Weekly, made its world premiere in San Francisco in 2003 before becoming a pop-culture juggernaut. A girl power revamp of the L. Frank Baum mythology, “Wicked” is based on the popular books by Gregory Maguire with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
