Wicked Musical currently touring in Costa Mesa CA for almost 4-week run through March 17, 2013. The Wizard of Oz has returned to the Segerstrom Center for the third time and reviewed by ANNE VALDESPINO – Here is the review:

Now a decade old, “Wicked” continues to set records for ticket sales and it still attracts an eclectic audience: little girls in ruby red dresses, punks with platinum hair, fresh-faced young women dragging their boyfriends, seniors and gay couples. Its soaring score, fantasy landscape, love story and a book packed with one-liners appeal to a wide demographic.

It’s no surprise that composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, with his love of challenging subjects, could craft a musical out of Gregory Maguire’s best-selling 1995 novel. “Wicked” bristles with great music, from its foreboding title track, “No One Mourns the Wicked,” to songs of young love awakening such as “I’m Not That Girl,” and plenty of anthemic ballads in between: “Defying Gravity” and “The Wizard and I.”

Schwartz is suddenly hot again – or perhaps he’s never gone cold. “Pippin” is poised for a spring Broadway revival, and “Wicked” is just more candy for his hard-core fans. The composer of “Godspell” and Disney musicals including “Enchanted,” “Pocahontas,” and “The Prince of Egypt,” Schwartz is a master of pulling on heartstrings.

“Wicked” is about the odd friendship of two girls, one blond and popular, the other a green witch with strange powers. Thrown together accidentally, they experience the typical phases of teen relationships: first dances, bonding over clothes and hairstyles, fighting over the cutest boy in the school. Add politics, sorcery, betrayal and murder to the mix.

Continually taunted for her green skin, Elphaba attends school only to care for her wheelchair-bound sister Nessarose, and meets her opposite, Glinda, the girl with the golden hair. At first they tangle, then become roomies and best friends. Handsome prince Fiyero tests their loyalties by first falling for Glinda and then taking up Elphaba’s political cause: her championing of animal rights, which lands her in deep trouble at school and with the Wizard. Meanwhile, Nessarose has her heart set on Boq, a Munchkin who only has eyes for Glinda.

Wicked is currently performing at Orange County Performing Arts Center Segerstrom Hall, Costa Mesa CA till Sunday, April 3. Costa Mesa is going green this month.

After seven years, the “Wicked” juggernaut shows no signs of abating. The Broadway production passed the 3,000-performance mark earlier this year. In January, the New York, London, and two U.S. national touring productions all broke box office records for weekly gross revenues.

So many adore Wicked because it delivers everything people expect of a musical-theater experience: spectacle, songs you can sing in the shower, an emotionally compelling story with high stakes and underdog heroes. “Wicked” also makes the most of a theme that audiences of all ages can relate to: the unbreakable bond of friendship. “Wicked’s” greatest strength is the Glinda-Elphaba relationship. This story is ultimately about the unpredictability, resilience and importance of friendship, and how opposites often form the tightest bonds.

“Wicked” tells the tale of the Wicked Witch before she achieved her infamy and misfortune, and it fills in the back-story about Oz and its not-so-wonderful Wizard.

Earlier in life, the Wicked Witch was known as Elphaba. Born into a noble household, Elphaba is blamed for her younger sister’s disability. Nessarose was born prematurely (a result, Elphaba believes, of her parents’ fear of producing another child with Elphaba’s bright green skin) and is unable to walk.

Wicked is performing from March 9 to April 3 at Orange County Performing Arts Center – Segerstrom Hall, in Costa Mesa CA.

Schedule:
Through April 3. 7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday

Broadway’s Blockbuster Wicked Returns to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and Performing through Sunday, April 03, 2011

Wicked is a style story of how good-hearted Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West. This is an epic Broadway production with a perfect mix of simple, low-key moments as well as powerful show-stopping numbers. Every piece of music serves to advance the story or evolve the characters. Every character the audience is already familiar with comes into play. This doesn’t just provide the backstory to Elphaba and Glinda, but rather, the entirety of Oz.

Bringing to life these characters is an amazing cast across-the-board, but of course, the standouts are Natalie Daradich as Glinda and Anne Brummel as Elphaba. The production wouldn’t work if these two characters weren’t believable in their roles. They have to convey multiple levels of depth to their characters, always keeping us in the moment while simultaneously never letting us forget what they are going to become. It seems an impossible task, but both performers do a brilliant job. The stage design is stunning, the music is thrilling, and the story is far more clever than one would expect. The audience was enraptured from beginning to end, soaking in every moment and reassessing the story they thought they knew so well.

Wicked is performing from March 9 to April 3 at Orange County Performing Arts Center – Segerstrom Hall, in Costa Mesa CA. Each day, 2½ hours prior to show time people who present themselves at the Segerstrom Center Box Office will have their names placed in a lottery drum and then 30 minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This lottery is available only in-person at the Box Office, with a limit of two tickets per person.

The Orange County Performing Arts Center is rejoicing this year, as center president Terry Dwyer prepares for what he calls “our more eclectic season yet,” to the LA Times. The lineup of the 2010- 2011 Broadway and Curtain Call productions for the company include the new show by Cirque du Soleil, “Mary Poppins,” “Hair” and “Wicked.” All shows are set to perform at the center’s Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa, opening with the Broadway series October 21 through November 14 with the Tony Bartlett Sher revival “Sot Pacific.” Like every other touring Broadway company, each show is presented with its own company in tow and will fill the season with joy and excitement. Next comes the few detail Cirque du Soleil feature from December 7-26, which Dwyer describes as something that will work better in a theater rather than their typical tent. “Hair,” performs January 25 – February 6th, with “Wicked” returning March 9th through April 3rd. The story of the Wicked Witch of the West and her rooommate from college Glinda the Good Witch previously performed at the Segerstrom Hall in Costa Mesa in 2006 and broke box office records. Why the return, and so soon after it’s last performance? For Dwyer, “people let us know they really wanted to see it again.”
