Wicked musical ran for more than three-and-a-half years in a dedicated Chicago production from 2005 to 2009. But this time it’s the national touring company coming to Chicago to play at Oriental Theatre for only eight-week engagement this October 2013.

Wicked Shines When Glinda the Good Witch is on Stage – reviewed by D.L. Groover.

The set-up:
With all the aerial modes of transportation on display in Stephen Schwartz’s (and book writer Winnie Holtzman’s) megahit musical Wicked – winged monkeys, broomstick, tornado, fairground balloon, and bubble – you’d think this theatrical juggernaut from 2003, the fourth incarnation to visit Houston via Gexa on Broadway, would have learned how to fly.

The execution:
Based very loosely upon Gregory Maguire’s adult “prequel” to L. Frank Baum’s classic series of children’s books, this Broadway adaptation owes whatever magic it possesses to the long-ago, golden age wizards of MGM. Wicked’s creators should be on their knees in thanks, because without the cinematic references to characters, costume and set design, even lines of dialogue, this show would be nowhere.

The verdict:
The show, immensely popular and still selling out on Broadway as well as in every city it tours, is impervious to criticism. Ten years down the road, it has lost none of its power to beguile and will probably be around fifty years from now packing the house. This is family entertainment with a vengeance, and it’s heartening to see young ones in the audience so thrilled by live theater. But I think they marvel at the quantity, not the quality.

Jennifer DiNoia plays Elphaba in Wicked

Wicked main cast Jennifer DiNoia, who plays Elphaba, talks about green makeup, vocal rest and being awkward – Here is the interview:

Jennifer DiNoia remembers the first time she heard “Defying Gravity.”

“I always thought of myself as a dancer who could sing. At that moment, I heard ‘Defying Gravity’ and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this is amazing. This role is the biggest, the best female role you could play,’” she said.

A decade later, DiNoia is portraying Elphaba all over the world, including when the tour stops at Kalamazoo’s Miller Auditorium from April 24 through May 5.

DiNoia is the one of several Elphabas to follow 2004 Tony Award-winner Idina Menzel’s portrayal. DiNoia said it’s a challenge to live up to Menzel.

“It gets a little difficult when people start writing things about you online, but I try to stay away from much of it as I can, because I don’t want to get into my head what people think. I want to stay true to who I am. Obviously, I’ve learned from other Elphabas, but I like to make it my own at the same time. I’m proud of that,” she said.

DiNoia has been with the production for seven years, she said. She’s played Elphaba in Broadway, Chicago, Australia and South Korea companies. This is her first turn playing Elphaba as the lead. This tour finds DiNoia paying especially close attention to her health, she said.

“I’m definitely super cautious about everything I do with my voice and everything. I’m drinking more tea and definitely trying to stay quiet when I’m not at the show, the vocal rest kind of thing. I’m trying to stay healthy and take my multi-vitamins,” she said.

Wicked Second North American tour to welcome new cast beginning April 3 in Rochester, NY. Cast to be added – Jennifer DiNoia as Elphaba, Hayley Podschun as Glinda and David Nathan Perlow as Fiyero.
